Unnecessary to say that Banquo was ordered executed by Macbeth. The two
assassins missed Banquo's son, but when reporting to Macbeth, he asked
if Banquo was safe, meaning dead. The safe can be a strongbox in one
usage, filled with all the techniques modern assassins avail. The safe
describes the safe places that became a rage in universities to pull
down statues. And the safe is a coffin, since there is not now or ever
has been any safe place in life. As Geo Washington put it, "either
drenched with blood or Inhabited by Slaves" (to G. W. Fairfax in London,
31 May, 1775).
