Days Before

 

Those Days before the Floods we thought

to topple kings of war

before Impossibilities taught

do not be one with the world

that Indian, Irish, German, Black,

the captive life endured.

Spanish against the English caught,

Christian between new life and flesh,

Knew each other as they walked.

 

Galligaskin strips benzined the hills

rinsing smoke from engine soot,

carried down black coal chute

to smoke the river dawn.

Forest fires shot up noon,

Oil down below the track

In lariet swings of pigment loops

Undredged divots in the creek,

And bales of scrap from railway cars

Explored the way it feels to know

unsanctified thoughts of scale.
